USKFI 16th Shotokan Cup

(Children's Kata Lucy Kennedy takes the title)

The USKFI wrapped up its series of National competitions for 2017 with the USKFI Shotokan Cup. The tournament which is in its 16th year was held in the Phibblestown Karate Club and sees competitors come from far afield to compete for the top spot of the podium. We continue to see a steady increase in participants and the clear development in standard within the USKFI, not just from the competitors but from the whole team involved with running these events. The constant striving for perfection within our referees technical committee is having a knock on effect with the junior judges and referees as we see continuous improvements as each tournament passes. WSKA 2017

As the dust settled from a superb WSKA 2017 the Irish squad arrived back in Dublin after departing Italy early Monday morning. The WSKA Championships which is held every two years attracts the highest level of Shotokan practitioners from all corners of the globe. This year the tournament was held in Treviso, Italy; a quiet beautiful city in Northern Italy.

The members of the squad from our youngest member Leon to our most senior Sean all performed tremendously and done the USKFI and their country proud. Although the USKFI squad returned light on silverware this time around they arrived home with a wealth of invaluable experience. Each time the USKFI squad participates in these high calibre tournaments the growth and improvement is clearly visible and although a small squad of just five athletes team Ireland were capable of standing toe to toe with some of the best Karateka in the world. The team performed superbly and all surpassed their personal bests at this high level with Leon, Sean and Yacine all coming very close to winning their pools to make it into the semi finals of the respective events.

At this high level of competition there are no losers; you win or you learn and this was without a doubt a was a fantastic learning experience for the whole team. The next International event for the team is the ESKA in eight weeks time in Portugal. Time to get back to the dojo where preparation starts once again.

The USKFI would like to thank our squad coaches Sensei Michael Sherlock & Sensei David Royle, our international referees Sensei Jennifer Prendergast. Sensei Jim Bartley and Sensei Bernard Gaffney for their relentless hard work in the build up to this event and especially over the competition weekend. They are always striving for perfection in their fields of expertise and this in turn is constantly raising the standard within our association. We would also like to thank the parents who traveled with the team and supported throughout the weekend.

Finally the USKFI would like to congratulate the KUGB teams from England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland on their superb performances over the weekend and the Italian Karate Association for hosting such a fantastic tournament.

Dan Grade Class & PreDan

The USKFI continued with our busy calendar of events this weekend with a Dan grade course followed by a PreDan grade. We had as always great support on both courses from our members.
The first course consisted of Sensei Sherlock putting the Dan grades through a number of kihon drills developing technique, dynamism and speed. This carried on into the partner work with a series of kicking drills. Sensei Royle took over at the half way mark and continued on with some dynamic partner work but concentrating on the basic principles of movement and scoring. To finish up with a superb course the Dan grades worked on their favorite Katas and this was a perfect opportunity for members to perfect their performances with the experienced eyes of Sensei Sherlock & Royle watching over.
After a short interval it was time for the Dan grade hopefuls to be put through their passes for the first Predan class of 2016.
Sensei Royle guided our members through each step of the Kihon section of the grade, elaborating on the finer detail whilst still maintaining the intense attitude and drive from each member. After the Kihon section was completed each member those hoping to attain Shodan right up to Godan went through their Katas; favorite kata and of course each of the compulsory Katas.
To finish up a tough but very informative session members were taken through the Kumite section of their grading. Sensei Sherlock & Sensei Royle gave some very important tips on where members needed to improve and what is required in their grading.
It was another fantastic day of training for our members and we wish them all the very best of luck for their upcoming grades.
The USKFI would like to thank each and every member for their continued support and Sensei Sherlock & Sensei Royle for putting on a fantastic course.

Judges Success!!

The USKFI’s Referee Technical Committee continued with their educational programme in March with a theory & practical workshop for USKFI referee & judges. The course which was run in conjunction with the USKFI’s open squad training session saw both qualified officials and new participants in attendance. The workshop was run by the USKFI’s most experienced international referees Sensei James Bartley, Sensei Jennifer Prendergast and Sensei Bernard Gaffney. Each member of the technical committee had a vital role to ensure all basis were covered during the workshop; Sensei Bartley going through the USKFI competition rule book in great detail, Sensei Prendergast took the group through the referees and judges signals and finally Sensei Gaffney presented the group with a number of video clips of Kata & Kumite explaining the relevant points to watch out for while officiating.
With the theory part completed it was time to get some real time practice in. While the referee workshop was in process the USKFI’s squad coaches Sensei Sherlock & Sensei Royle were putting squad members through their paces in the main hall. This was a perfect opportunity for the USKFI officials to get a hand on approach to refereeing.
Within the USKFI the concentration is always about education and with a mixture of experienced officials to ones just starting their judging career this was the perfect learning environment for all members in attendance to benefit from. When the workshop had come to a close we had three members take the USKFI stringent judges examination where each member passed with a high pass rate.  Congratulations to Sensei Jason Smyth, Susanne Passas and Sensei Fran Hoban.

USKFI Grade Weekend March 2016

The USKFI held the first grading of 2016 this weekend in the Corduff Dojo. We had over 180 kyu grades take the next step on their karate journey under the watchful eyes of USKFI's grading examiners Sensei Sherlock and Sensei David Royle.

(White - Red Belts)
The standard on show over the two days was quite impressive and once again proves the technical development and high standard set from the top down by the USKFI is certainly filtering through to our members. An excellent show from all on the day.

(Brown Belts)

(Blackloin SKC's Lucy was certainly a stand out performer of the white belts)

(Aaron Smyth & Arisha Foysal also two members that stood out on the day)

The USKFI would like to thank our members and parents for their continuous support. We would also like to the USKFI grading examiners Sensei Sherlock and Royle for providing a firm but fair grading for all our members. Finally we would like to thank Sensei Bernard Gaffney, Sensei Jim Bartley & Sensei Pat Keegan for all their hard work and assistance on the day to ensure the smooth running of the event.

(Kyu grade course)

The USKFI would like to thank all our members who supported our Spring seminar with Sensei Andy Sherry and Sensei Frank Brennan from the KUGB. It was a fantastic day of training with two of the best instructors in Shotokan Karate. A full day of training which started with a course for our Dan grades followed by a course for our brown and black belts and then finished up with a course for our kyu grades. The seminar covered a wide range of techniques in the kihon section with both Senseis explaining some excellent points, some superb kumite drills with the concentration on footwork and dynamic counter attacks. Katas covered on the day were Jitte and Kanku Sho for the senior grades whilst the Kyu graded covered Bassai Dai and a selection of Heian Katas in preparation for their upcoming grades.

As always there was a tremendous atmosphere in the dojo with so many enthusiastic Karateka on the floor which was noted well by both Sensei Sherry and Brennan.
Once again the USKFI would like to thank all our members, instructors and parents for their constant support. Without your support these events would not be as successful.
We look forward to welcoming Sensei Sherry back to Dublin in April for our first Dan grading of the year.

ESKA Crawley 2015

Members from USKFI travelled to Crawley in the UK over the weekend to take part in the 30th European Shotokan Karate Association Championships. The tournament which is the most prestigious Shotokan tournament in Europe sees top athletes come from far afield to compete for the top spot on the podium.

USKFI squad members Leeanne Royle, Yacine Ghanem, Sean O Connor and Lee Mc Carthy were part of the team that travelled to participate in the tournament. Each of the squad members performed superbly over the two days and gave it 100% percent in their performances. In particular Lee McCarty produced his best performances to date. He performed really well to come through a tough group in the cadet Kata event. Lee made it through to the semi final which is a great achievement for Lee. Lee performed really well in the semis but missed out on a spot in the final by a small margin.

(Lee Mc Carthy in action in the Kata semi final)

(Leeanne Royle scores with a perfectly timed gyaku tsuki)

Unfortunately this time around the team came home without any silverware but what they did come home with was very valuable experience which they will take to their next competition. As we always say at every championships sometimes you win and sometimes you learn.....never lose!! The guys performed really well and a are a great representation for the USKFI.

Another fantastic Kata course for the USKFI today in the Corduff Dojo with Sensei Sherlock & Sensei Royle.

The second half of the course Sensei Royle took the Dan grades through the Bunkai of Gankaku while Sensei Sherlock thought the brown belts Kata Kanku Sho. It was a brilliant day of training under the expert tuition of two amazing instructors.

USKFI Shotokan Cup

The USKFI’S 2015 Shotokan Cup took place on Saturday 17th October at the Phibblestown Karate Club.

The Shotokan Cup which is now in its 14th year has a slightly different format than the USKFI’s other National competitions. In the brown and black belt section it gives our members a chance to perform on an individual basis. Each member will choose their own Katas to perform in the elimination rounds. This gives each of our members the opportunity to perform a number of different Katas in a competition environment.

The event proved to be a great success with many outstanding and spirited Kata and Kumite matches to entertain the spectators. Of the many fantastic performances on the day a special mention must be given to Navan SKC’s Leon Hoban, a tremendous competitor that has just gone from strength to strength over the past few years. He swept aside his opponents in the elimination rounds winning each match in decisive fashion. Leon went on to take home gold in the boy’s kumite event and also gold in his kata event. After his fine performances throughout the day Leon got an added bonus when he was selected by the USKFI Referee & Judges technical committee to receive the award for the most outstanding male competitor of the day. The most outstanding female award went to Phibblestown SKC’s Patricia Hurjui after a fine display in the Girl’s Kumite and Kata events. Patricia managed to take home gold in both events and at the tender grade of purple belt Patricia put on some fine displays beating USKFI squad members in the process. A great achievement for Patricia, she is showing lots of potential for the future.

(Leon Hoban presented with Best Male Competitor Trophy)

(Patricia Hurjui presented with Best Female Competitor Trophy)

We had so many fine performances on the day from each category; we saw Hannah Stewart and Ayllen Jicmon battle it out in the Girls Ippon Kumite with Hannah coming out on top to take home the Gold. In the boys Ippon Kumite event it was like déjà vu when we once again saw Ray Foysal take on Shay Kelly where Ray eventually piped Shay to the title. In the 10-11 yrs boys kumite we saw fine performances from Dimitri Kavanagh and Brendan Reyes. In the senior ladies events we saw newcomer to the event Leeanne Royle take the title in both Kata and Kumite. To finish off a magnificent day of karate we saw USKFI squad members Lee MC Carty and Sean O Connor battle it out for the senior men’s title. Once again a tough nail biting match which eventually saw Sean take home the title.

(Sean O Connor & Lee McCarty battle it out in the Kumite final)

(Leeanne Royle & Lina Tumene battle it out in the Ladies Kumite Final)

The USKFI would like to thank all the Referees, Judges and Officials and all members who helped out in organising the event. Congratulations to all of the competitors whose high standards and fighting spirit is an inspiration to us all and a big thank you to all parents and spectators who came to cheer them on.

WSKA Championships Poland Oct 2015

USKFI squad members travelled to Bielsko-Biala in Poland in early October to take part in the 12th World Shotokan Karate-Do Championships. The squad members were accompanied by USKFI squad coaches Sensei Michael Sherlock and Sensei David Royle along with the USKFI's International referees Sensei James Bartley & Sensei Bernard Gaffney.

The competition which is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world of Shotokan Karate was held over two days and saw hundreds of elite athletes travel from all corners of the globe to compete for a place on the podium.

The USKFI quadruple that consisted of Sean O Connor, Lee Mc Carty, Leeanne Royle & Yacine Ghanem all competed in various events for Kata & Kumite. The squad performed really well with Yacine Ghanem making his first outing at World Championships level. Yacine made it through a couple of rounds but unfortunately was defeated by some tough opposition. Sean O Connor also did really well with very strong performances in both the junior and senior kumite events. Unfortunately Sean was a bit too strong and was disqualified for contact. Lee also made some very positive progress in his events with some real signs of improvement in his performances. Clearly the competition experiences gained for these guys over the past few months is paying off as we now see a significant improvement on all levels for these guys.

Leeanne Royle who recently made the transition to the older category of cadets (16-17yrs) had a superb weekend on the mats. Once again we seen some very mature experienced performances from this very young lady. In the cadet events Leeanne came very close to a booking a place in the final in both her Kata & Kumite events. In the Kata event Leeanne narrowly missed out to her opponent with the judges split on their decision with Poland coming out on top with the vote coming out as 3-2 in favour of Poland. In the kumite event Leeanne had some excellent elimination rounds but once again narrowly missed out to her Swiss counterpart. With the match tied at 1-1 both ladies were pushing for the winning score, as both competitors launched their attack simultaneously the Swiss competitor was just that bit sharper and pipped Leeanne to get the score first. Once again a fantastic performance from Leeanne.

Leeanne also entered the older category for 18-20yrs to gain some extra competitive experience. Although only entering to gain some additional competition experience Leeanne as always performed very well and managed to storm through the Kata rounds beating some very tough opposition on the way. She managed to book herself a place in the final where she competed against some very strong competitors from Russia, Hungary and Sweden. After her performance of Kanku Sho Leeanne was delighted to be returning home with a bronze medal in what was a very tough event. Leeanne is the only ever Irish Karateka to medal in this event. A fantastic result for Leeanne and the USKFI.

We would like to congratulate all members on a fantastic weekend of competition. Sometimes we win and sometimes we learn (we never lose). Although not all our members medalled at the weekend the most important thing is the experience that is gained, win, lose or draw all experience stands to you in time. Keep working hard, keep improving and your time will come.

Rokudan success for Sensei David Royle

The USKFI are very proud to announce that co-founding member Sensei David Royle successfully attained his Rokudan (6th Dan) under the KUGB grading panel in late September. The KUGB grading panel which consists of Shotokan karate legends Sensei Andy Sherry 9th Dan, Sensei Bob Poynton 8th Dan & Sensei Frank Brennan 8th Dan kept a careful eye as Sensei Royle was put through his paces.

Sensei Royle who is well known throughout the Karate world was accompanied by USKFI Chief Instructor Sensei Michael Sherlock and USKFI Secretary Sensei Jennifer Prendergast to the Special Dan grade course that was held in Bath in the UK.
Sensei Royle’s years of hard work, commitment and dedication to the art of Shotokan Karate has brought him to this well-deserved point in what has been and continues to be a very successful Karate career.  Sensei Royle has dedicated most of his life to his karate and it is for this reason he is probably one of the youngest Karateka to be ranked at this level having gone through the rigorous grading system of the Karate Union of Great Britain.
Sensei Royle certainly sets a fine example for any Karateka to follow. His commitment and dedication to the USKFI and its members is forever present and that did not falter even in the preparation for such a tough examination. Congratulations Sensei Royle.

Sensei Brennan & Sensei Harford Autumn Seminar

The USKFI were delighted to welcome Sensei Frank Brennan & Sensei Garry Harford back to Dublin for our annual Autumn seminar. We had close to 100 members in attendance for a fantastic day of training under the expert tuition of these two legends of Shotokan Karate.

(Dan Grade Masterclass)

(Brown & Black Belt Course)

The course was separated into three 1.5hr sessions with Sensei Brennan and Sensei Harford taking our members through their paces with lots of different aspects of Kihon, Kata and Kumite. The attitude from our members was as always tremendous which in turn made the atmosphere in the dojo almost electric with each and every member giving 100% on the floor. A notable element in which both Sensei Brennan & Sensei Harford were really impressed by.

Considering the fact there was no grading and members were there simply just to train and enjoy themselves is impressive in itself. Our members show true dedication and love for karate to stay and train for four and a half hours and put their heart into every movement. Within the USKFI the example is set from the top down with our senior instructors Sensei Sherlock and Sensei Royle leading the way never missing a session and giving there all when on the floor. It is a perfect example for our members to follow.

Within the USKFI it is all about a high standard of karate and we are delighted to be in a position to welcome experts in their field such as Sensei Brennan and Sensei Harford numerous times throughout the year to pass down their vast knowledge to our members. We look forward to welcoming Sensei Brennan back in November where he will be accompanied by KUGB Chief Instructor Sensei Andy Sherry for another fantastic course.

KUGB Shotokan Cup

Well done to USKFI squad members Leeanne Royle, Yacine Ghanem, Lee McCarthy and Sean O Connor who took part in the 40th KUGB Shotokan Cup last weekend.

Leeanne Royle picked up a bronze medal in the junior ladies kata final. After winning her opening matches in a decisive fashion Leeanne also picked up a bronze medal in junior ladies kumite after a very tight match with KUGB squad member Emily Hughes. An excellent result for Leeanne as she has just made the progression into the older category for 16-20year olds.

Sean, Lee and Yacine all performed very well also with some big improvements. Lots more experience gained to bring into the next competition.

Next event for the guys is the WSKA championships in Poland in October. Good luck all!!!

USKFI B&B Belt Kata Course

Well done to all USKFI members who attended the USKFI's Autumn Kata Course with Sensei Sherlock & Sensei Royle. Just like it had been right through the summer months the course was once again very well supported from our members with attendance on our courses continuing to grow & grow.

The class was separated into two groups. Sensei Royle took our brown belts through Kata Jion. Sensei Royle covered every intricate detail of the Kata incorporating different aspects of Bunkai so each member went away with a very good understanding of the Kata.

Sensei Sherlock thought the Dan grades the advanced Kata Gojushiho Dai. Once again a new Kata for alot of our members but Sensei Sherlock's attention to detail left no stone uncovered and each of the Dan grades were able to perform this tough Kata with a very good standard by the end of the seminar.

Well done to all those in attendance and we look forward to another great USKFI seminar when Sensei Brennan and Sensei Harford visit in two weeks time.

The USKFI Summer Kata seminar was held in the Corduff Karate Club over the weekend and even though it is holiday season we still had a fantastic turnout from our members. Over 50 brown and black belts turned out to train with Sensei Sherlock & Royle for a 2hr Kata masterclass.

The class was seperated into 2 sections with Sensei Sherlock taking the 2nd Dans and above for Kata Gankaku whilst Sensei Royle took the junior black belts and brown belts through Kata Enpi. After a quick break Senseis switched and Sensei Sherlock thought the junior dan grades & brown belts kata Kanku Dai whilst Sensei Royle thought the seniors Kata Sochin.

There was as always a fantastic atmosphere in the dojo and each and every member gave 100% throughout the session. Whether members were only learning the kata for the first time or refining the intricate details by the end of the seminar each member could perform the Kata with a very good standard. In each event we had a very ambitious competitor representing the USKFI with a very high level of karate. (Navan SKC's Leon Hoban scores with jodan gyaku tsuki)

Well done to all USKFI members who took part in the recent Kumite Championships. We saw some excellent performances on the day in particular from Corduff SKC's Yacine Ghanem finishing his matches in style scoring with jodan mawashi geri techniques. We saw Hartstown SKC's Emma Donoghue take home the girls title with some very strong displays. Another stand out performer on the day was Navan SKC's Leon Hoban, he fought superbly well in the boys kumite event dominating all his opponents to take home the title. Well done to Lucan's Dmitri Kavanagh who took home the boys 10-11yrs kumite title. Dmitry who just recently turned ten is a newcomer to the event performed very well throughout the day. Well done to all on the day, keep working hard and developing well. Squad coaches will be selecting a squad to represent the USKFI at the KUGB’s Shotokan cup later this year and watch out for members with potential in these particular events.

KUGB 49th National Championships

(USKFI squad coaches Sensei Sherlock & Royle hold team talk before event kicks off)

(Sensei Sherry presents Leeanne Royle wit the Charles Naylor memorial Cup)

A fantastic day came to a close for USKF Ireland with some superb results for our team at the 49th KUGB National Championships. The competition which is one of the most prestigious events on the calendar attracts a massive volume of competitors from across the UK and Ireland. We had a very successful day with our members dominating one of the toughest events of the day in the children's black belt kata event. We had three members Leeanne, Mapalo and Leon all making it into the finals with Emma & James narrowly missing out on a place after some fantastic performances. Nice to come home with three of the four medals that were up for grabs!!! We also saw Sophie Farrell storming her way through the kumite rounds bagging herself a bronze medal. We saw our team kata of Leeanne, Mapalo and Leon take home a bronze medal in what was a very tough event. Leeanne also fought superbly in the girls kumite event with some clinical performances to get through to the final which she finished in a similar fashion to take home the gold.

(Leeanne Royle scores with Ushiro Geri in the eliminations)

The whole squad performed tremendously well on the day with many of our members narrowly missing out on places in the final. Some tough battles were had and lots of experience gained. Unfortunately not all made it to the podium this time around but now it's time to refocus and get ready for next competition.

(USKFI medal winners at the KUGB Nationals)

To finish off what was a tremendous day for the USKFI Ireland after a fantastic day of competing Leeanne Royle was presented with the Charles Naylor Memorial trophy by Sensei Sherry for being the most outstanding under 16yrs competitor. An award well deserved after some fine performances throughout the day in both Kata & Kumite.

Well done to all and we look forward to the next haul of medals at the Liverpool Youth Championships in a few weeks time.

(Special Dan grade class)

(Sensei Sherry with our successful candidates)

The USKFI were happy to welcome Sensei Andy Sherry back to Dublin for our first course and Dan grading of the year. The course started with a course for Dan grades only where Sensei covered some basic fundamental drills concentrating on development of good form. Sensei also covered some kicking drills concentrating on mawashi geri, ushiro geri and ura mawashi geri techniques. Sensei finished up with Kata Kanku Sho and whether members were just learning the kata or refining everybody left with a very good understanding of this advanced Kata.

To follow the Dan grade class we had a class for only members grading. Sensei put all the Dan grade hopefuls through their paces and gave them very important pointers of what was required for their Dan grading. After a short break the Dan grade followed and we were delighted with the very positive results on the day adding thirteen new Shodans, one new Nidan and two new Sandans to the expanding USKFI.
Well done to all!!

USKFI Orange - Brown Belt Course

The USKFI took up where they left off last week with another brilliant three hour course for our orange to brown belts. There was great support as always from the USKFI members with so many braving the cold and the snow to make the course. It goes to show the dedication from our members with many travelling from as far as Wicklow, Kildare, and Meath and some even as far as Cavan to attend.

The course was separated into two groups with the first session for members over sixteen years and the second session for members under sixteen years. The focus of today’s course was on building very good fundamentals and the development of technique. Each member went away with a very good understanding of what is required to help them develop their technique and form. Whether it was in for Kihon, Kumite or Kata Sensei Sherlock and Sensei Royle didn’t leave a stone unturned and that was clearly evident as the class progressed each member was able to improve in all areas.

The USKFI would like to thank all our members who attended today and we look forward to seeing all our juniors compete in next week’s event National Youth Championships.

USKFI Summer Kumite Course

There was a fantastic turn out this morning for the USKFI's summer kumite course that was held in the Corduff Dojo. Considering it is holiday season there was still great support from our members as always.
The classes were split into two sections with Sensei Royle taking the junior members that were under sixteen whilst Sensei Sherlock took the senior members. At the half way mark Senseis switched with Sensei Sherlock taking the juniors whilst Sensei Royle took the seniors.
Both Sensei Sherlock and Sensei Royle were in their element with their years of experience shining through showing the many aspects of kumite.
There was a tremendous atmosphere in the Dojo with everybody putting in 100% effort. There was very positive feedback from Sensei Sherlock & Sensei Royle after the course and both were very impressed that regardless of age or grade everybody worked very hard and gave their all.
The USKFI would like to thank each and every member for their support today and over the years, without the continued support from our members we would not be able to hold so many free events throughout the year so once again thank you all.

Certificate presentation

In the midst of a very busy day at the USKF National Championships there was a moment of recognition for two of recently qualified referee and judges. Sensei Pat Keegan was presented with his cert after passing a very challenging referee qualification, alongside him was Kim Maguire who also passed a very tough judges exam. For both members their hard work and study along with the extra courses each member attended with the USKFI's Referee and Judges technical committee has clearly paid off. The dedication shown ensures that our refereeing and judging is kept to the highest level. Well done to both.

(USKFI Chief instructor presents Sensei Pat Keegan for successfully attaining his referee qualification)

(USKFI Chief instructor presents Kim Maguire for successfully attaining her judges qualification)

There was also time to pay thanks to the recently formed USKFI fundraising committee. The committee consists of Chairwoman Rhonda Hoban, Secretary Eleanore Coates, Amanda Anderson, Jean Smithers, Gina Farrell, Liz Wynne, Neil Anderson and Samantha Keating. The committee plays a vital role in the organisation and has already this year raised a significant amount of much needed funds for the USKFI. The hard work put in at the beginning of the year from the FC allowed the USKFI invest in three mated areas for our championships. Without the sheer hard work and support from our members this would not have been possible. All funds raised go towards the everyday running of the USKFI. E.g. subsidized courses, grades, competitions etc. Without on-going fundraising it would be impossible to keep these fees low so on behalf of all USKFI members we would like to take this opportunity to thank the FC for all their hard work.

USKFIreland would like to congratulate our 2 squad members Sean O Connor & Eleanore Coates who were representing the USKFI at the European Championships in Portugal this weekend. Considering this was Sean's first time representing Ireland at ESKA he performed very well with some very mature performances. Well done Sean, lots of experienced gained for the future.
Eleanore Coates had some very strong performances on the day. Eleanore met Belgium in the first round which went to sudden death where Eleanore scored with a strong gyakuzuki to win the match. Eleanore then met Portugal in the second round, after a very intense match Eleanore came out on top with the decisive scores. In the quater finals Eleanore met Sweden to battle it out for a place in the final. After a very tough battle between the two competitors Sweden came out on top with Eleanore narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
Well done to both competitors who represented their country very well at the most prestigious Shotokan Championships in Europe

USKFI Juniors with their silverware

Fresh off the back of their recent successes in the KUGB National Championships the USKFI's fantastic Junior squad travelled to the UK this weekend to take part in the 12th Liverpool Youth Championships. As always there was a tremendous attitude and standard on display from the squad with some brilliant performances. The stand out performers on the day were Evan Wynne & Mapalo Mwenya. He stormed his way through the eliminations to book his place in the final where his eventually took home silver being beaten by a single wazari.  Evan took home gold in both the novice Kata event and boys Ippon Kumite event.

Leeanne Royle sailed through the kata eliminations to book her place in the final where she performed a suburb Empi to take home silver missing out on 1st place by a very small margin. Leeanne also took home a bronze medal in the girls kumite event. Emma Donoghue consistently performed well in the girls Ippon Kumite event showing great technique and attitude going on to take home Gold.

To top off what turned out to be a brilliant day for the USKFI in the individual events both USKFI Team Katas were placed in the final against two teams from one of the KUGB's leading clubs Sendai Kushiro. USKFI Team A who consisted of Leon Hoban, Mapalo Mwenya and was captained  by Leeanne Royle went on to take Gold and USKFI Team B consisted of Evan Wynne, James Doran and was captained by Evan Hickey took home silver which was a tremendous achievement after meeting two first class teams from Sendai Kushiro.

KUGB National Championships Birmingham

The USKFI recently sent a team to take part in the KUGB’s National Championships in the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. This was the first time an Irish organisation had been invited to take part fully in this event and there was great excitement from those squad members chosen to compete. The event, which is now in its 44th year, comprised competitors from all over the KUGB’s clubs in the U.K. and is the major event on the KUGB’s calendar. The USKFI competitors performed exceptionally well with most competitors making it through several of the elimination rounds and several were tantalisingly close to meeting the seeded competitors before the finals. Joseph O’Hara fought incredibly well throughout the elimination rounds to make it through to the finals. In the finals he faced a seasoned competitor and showed great spirit and determination to come away with silver. His sister Ruth also stormed her way through the eliminations and was very unlucky not to secure a place in the finals, coming Joint Third in the Girls’ 10-11 Years Kumite.

The USKFI would like to extend their warmest thanks to the KUGB for inviting them to take part in their national competitions from now on. The links between the two organisations have become even closer throughout the years and the USKFI is delighted to be associated with such a major competition as the KUGB National Championships.
