KUGB Youth Championships

The USKFI took a small squad to the KUGB National Youth Championships in England last weekend. The squad, consisting Erica Henderson, Evan Hickey, Zara Daly, James Doran and Leeanne Royle travelled over with coach Sensei David Royle and a very supportive band of parents.

The standard of this competition was excellent and the USKFI team performed extremely well, with most getting through several rounds of the kata eliminations and several exceeding their personal bests in their respective kumite events. Newcomer James Doran, at only his second UK competition, performed extremely well in the ippon kumite as did Evan Hickey and Zara Daly, who were both extremely unlucky not to make it through to the finals. Leanne Royle continued her very successful year so far by storming her way through to both her kata and kumite finals. Unfortunately Leeanne suffered a heavy knock during the kumite eliminations and the decision was made to withdraw her from the finals, leaving her with a very credible Joint Third. To make it through to the finals was all the more impressive as she has just moved up to the 12-15 Girls section, having celebrate her birthday last week. In the kata finals she performed her best kata Empi to date and came in second place.

Coach David Royle was delighted with the performances of all squad members at the weekend. 'The standard of this competition was very high and our squad members all performed really well', he said.

It's the turn of the Seniors next as they compete at the KUGB Grand Slam in August. We wish them the best of luck.
