KUGB Shotokan Cup 2013

The USKFI squad travelled to Chesterfield in the UK this weekend to take part in the KUGB's Shotokan Cup. The squad performed superbly and were a fantastic representation of our organisation.
With the competition restricted to brown and black belts only there was a very high standard of competition. The USKFI juniors dominated a very tough kata event with Leon Hoban, Mapalo Mywena and James Doran all getting through to the semi finals. Unfortunately the boys had to compete against each other for a place in the final where Mapalo pipped James and Leon to take the place in the final where he eventually took home a bronze medal after a fine performance of Bassai Dai. We had a similar situation with the girls Kata event. Both Leeanne and Erika went through to the semi finals with some superb performances but eventually Erika missed out on a place in the final by .1 of a point. Leeanne performed an excellent Empi to take home a silver medal in one of the toughest categories of the day. In the Senior Ladies Kata event Eleanore Coates went through to the final but unfortunately due to injury had to pull out of the final and settle for a bronze medal.
Onto the kumite we had some excellent spirited matches, in particular for newcomer to the squad Lee McCarthy who put in a very valiant effort but was beaten by a single waza-ari by a competitor who eventually won the event. Stand out performer of the day was the USKFI's Leon Hoban. Leon displayed a fantastic attitude and karate spirit and sailed through the eliminations with some fantastic scores on the way. Unfortunately Leon was a little too strong for the 10-11 boys and eventually was disqualified for contact and missed out on a well deserved place in the final. Overall the squad performed terrifically and were a tremendous representation of our Organisation. Well done to all!!!
